"Mbare Academy is the first of its kind in Zimbabwean rugby, should it continue to blossom it could help widen the pool of players who will scramble for jerseys in the national team or in the local league someday."
Mbare Rugby Academy based at Gary Stark School in mbare has taken the baton from the two pioneering academies and has been making remarkable strides in trying to develop rugby at grass root level by bringing the sport to the high density suburb of Mbare.
The academy’s main objective is to protect the children from being trapped into the jaws of delinquency a stereotype associated with youths growing up in Mbare.
“Keeping the children off the streets through sport and rugby in particular is our main aim at the Academy … this has been our aim since the Academy inception some three years ago.” said Director of Rugby and Head Coach Victor Pekani.
The academy has drawn the attention of rugby enthusiasts from most schools in the High density suburb.
“We have over 75 children attending the Academy from schools within Mbare. Schools such as Gwinyai, Chitsere, St. Peters, Maria, Chirodzo, St. Micheals, Chiedza and Shingirai Primary Schools are all represented.’
Our competing age groups include the colts and U13 with our most senior side being the U14’s.”
